Abstract

This study analyzes the types of figurative language and their meanings found in selected lyrics from The Story So Far. This study focused on how figurative expressions are used to convey emotions and personal experiences in pop-punk music. Data were taken from nine selected songs: The Glass, Big Blind, Quicksand, Nerve, Roam, Small Talk, If I Fall, Growing on You, and Nothing to Say. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The types of figurative language were identified using the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963), while their meanings were analyzed based on Leech's (1981) theory of meaning. The findings show that there are 41 examples of figurative language in the selected lyrics. Metaphors are the most dominant type with 17 examples, followed by hyperbole with 9 examples. Other types found include simile, irony, personification, metonymy, paradox, and dead metaphor, while synecdoche and allusion were not found. In terms of meaning, affective meaning was the most frequently found with 21 data, followed by connotative meaning with 19 data, and conceptual meaning with 1 data. This study found that figurative language plays an important role in expressing emotional depth and meaning in the lyrics of The Story So Far.
