Abstract
This study is focuses on analyzing the flouting of conversational maxims in BoJack Horseman Season 1 from a pragmatic perspective. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of flouted conversational maxim and to explain the reasons why the characters flout these maxims. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data were taken from the dialogues of characters in all twelve episodes of Season 1. Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle is applied to analyze the types of flouted maxims, namely Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. In addition, Leech’s (1983) theory of illocutionary functions is used to explain the reasons underlying flouting maxim, including Competitive, Convivial, Collaborative, and Conflictive functions. The findings show that all four types of flouting maxims occur in the series, with the Maxim of Relation being the most frequently flouted. The results indicate that flouting maxim functions as a pragmatic strategy to convey implied meaning, express emotions, create humor, and manage interpersonal relationships in the dialogue.
