Abstract
This study aimed to analyse the types of coordinate clauses in compound declarative sentences and to examine their constituent structures as found in BBC News articles. The data were obtained from six economics-related articles published on BBC News in June 2025. A descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyse the data. The types of coordinate clauses were identified using Davidson’s (2002) theory, while the constituent structures were analysed through tree diagrams based on Brown and Miller’s (1991) framework. In addition, Quirk’s (1972) theory was used as a supporting theory to classify sentence types. The findings reveal that a total of 25 compound declarative sentences containing coordinate clauses were identified. Two types of coordinate clauses were found in the data: coordinate clauses without conjunctions and coordinate clauses with conjunctions. Coordinate clauses with conjunctions were the most dominant, occurring 18 times, while coordinate clauses without conjunctions appeared 7 times. Among the coordinating conjunctions, and was the most frequently used, followed by but, whereas nor, yet, and so appeared only once each, and for and or were not found. The constituent structure analysis shows that compound declarative sentences in BBC News generally follow the pattern S → S + Conj + S, reflecting clear coordination between independent clauses. This study demonstrates how compound declarative sentences are syntactically constructed to present factual information clearly and cohesively in journalistic writing.
