AN ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM IN INSIDE OUT 2 (2024) MOVIE

The research is conducted to analyze the phenomenon of flouting maxim in conversation by using the movie entitled Inside Out 2 (2024) as the data source. This study aims: (1) to analyze the types of flouting maxims conducted by the characters in Inside Out 2 movie, and (2) to analyze the reasons why the characters in Inside Out 2 (2024) movie flouted the maxims. The analysis is based on the theory proposed by Grice (1975) to analyze the types of flouting maxims and the theory proposed by Leech (1983) to analyze the reasons for flouting the maxims. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method to describe and analyze the data obtained from the movie. The data were collected through observation by watching the movie, reading the script, and taking notes of dialogues containing flouting maxims. The results of this study show that all types of flouting maxims are found in Inside Out 2 (2024) movie. There are 73 data of flouting maxims, consisting of 21 data (28.77%) flouting the maxim of Quantity, 10 data (13.70%) flouting the maxim of Quality, 36 data (49.31%) flouting the maxim of Relevance, and 6 data (8.22%) flouting the maxim of Manner. The most dominant type is flouting the maxim of Relevance. Meanwhile, based on the reasons, collaborative reason is the most dominant with 28 data (38.35%), followed by competitive, convivial, and conflictive reasons. These findings indicate that flouting maxims are used by the characters to convey implied meanings, express emotions, and support the development of the movie’s narrative.
