This study investigates the syntactic structure of compound sentences in You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao. Employing a qualitative descriptive design through document analysis, the research aims to identify the types of coordination and examine their constituent structures. The classification of coordination is based on Quirk and Greenbaum’s (1973) distinction between syndetic and asyndetic coordination, while the structural analysis follows Brown and Miller’s (1991) constituent framework represented through tree diagrams. The findings reveal that both syndetic and asyndetic coordination occur in the novel. However, syndetic coordination is dominant, accounting for 85.23% of the data, whereas asyndetic coordination represents 14.77%. Most compound sentences are constructed through the coordination of two independent clauses of equal syntactic status, typically following a clause + conjunction + clause pattern. The predominance of explicit coordinating conjunctions suggests that the narrative style reflects features of conversational syntax commonly associated with contemporary young adult fiction. This study therefore contributes to syntactic research by demonstrating how coordination functions not only as a grammatical structure but also as a stylistic feature in literary discourse.
