Abstract

Indrawati, A.A. Made. 2026. POLITENESS STRATEGY IN “PERSUASION” MOVIE. English Study Program, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. Supervisor: Putu Devi Maharani, S.S., M.Hum.; Cosupervisor: I Dewa Ayu Devi Maharani Santika, S.S., M.Hum. This study aims to analyze the politeness strategy which occur in the movie dialogue of Persuasion. The analysis is also including the social factors which influencing the application of politeness strategy in the data source. The data were taken from movie adaptation from novel with the same title which Persuasion (2022). In analyzing the data, a qualitative research method was applied in this study. The theory from Leech (2014) was used in this study to analyze the politeness strategy in the data source. The social factors which influencing the application of politeness strategy was based on the theory proposed by Holmes and Wilson (2017), they stated that social factors are including age, gender, social status, and kinship. In addition, to find out the context of situation of the movie scene where the politeness strategy occurred, a theory from Halliday and Hasan (1989) was also applied in this study. The findings reveal that there are 29 utterances which consist of politeness strategy were applied in the movie dialogue of Persuasion. Those 29 utterances included 3 utterances of generosity maxim, 4 utterances of approbation maxim, 1 utterance of agreement maxim 1 utterance of obligation of S to O maxim, and 1 utterance of sympathy maxim from pos-politeness. Meanwhile, the maxim of neg-politeness which found in the movie dialogue included 5 utterances of tact maxim, 3 utterances of modesty maxim, 6 utterances of obligation of o to s maxim, 3 utterances of opinion reticence maxim, and 2 utterances of feeling reticence maxim. The most dominant is the Obligation of O to S Maxim, followed by Tact and Approbation Maxims, indicating that gratitude, praise, and the minimization of imposition are central to maintaining harmony. The use of these maxims is influenced by social factors (Holmes and Wilson, 2017): gender shapes supportive and emotionally controlled strategies, kinship influences tact and sympathy, and social status is reflected in modesty expressions. This shows that politeness in Persuasion (2022) is socially structured and functions to negotiate relationships, power, and intimacy
