Abstract

This study concerned semiotic signs and explained the meaning of verbal and nonverbal signs that occur in fantasy movie posters which were used as the data source. The data were taken from three fantasy movie series posters. Those movie posters contain verbal and nonverbal signs which are interesting to analyze. This study aimed to answer two problems of study, those are the types of verbal and nonverbal signs in the movie series posters, and their meaning. This study used the theory of semiotics by Saussure (1983), theory of meaning by Barthes (1968), and theory of color by Cerrato (2012). A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data in thisstudy. As a result, those fantasy movie series posters showed the verbal and nonverbal signs to attract the audience to watch the movie. The verbal signs are all in the form of the text or writing meanwhile the nonverbal signs consist of color, background, symbol, image, etc. From the data, it was found that all the fantasy movie series posters consisted of verbal and nonverbal signs that were used to make the readers and the audience interested to watch that movie.
