Abstract

This research investigates the use of coordinating conjunctions in sentences about the Titanic found on Britannica.com, focusing on identifying the various types employed within compound phrases. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology informed by Quirk and Greenbaum's theory (1973), the study categorizes the 49 instances of data into three groups: syndetic coordination, asyndetic coordination, and a combination of both, reflecting the different forms of coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences. The findings reveal that 26 instances exhibit syndetic coordination, 17 demonstrate asyndetic coordination, and 6 feature a mix of both types. Within syndetic coordination, “and” is used in 21 instances, “but” in 4, and “so” in 1. As for asyndetic coordination, 14 instances employ commas, and 3 use semicolons. The remaining 6 instances incorporate both syndetic and asyndetic coordination.
