Abstract

This study aims to find out types of language style used by the character in Wednesday film series and analyze the factors that influence the character used the language style in Wednesday film series. The analysis was based on the theory of language style proposed by Joos (1967) and theory of social factor proposed by Holmes (1992). The data source of this study was the film series entitled Wednesday. The data were collected by observation method through several techniques, such as; watching the movie, note taking the utterances, and classifying the data based on the language style. According the table above, this study found four types of language style in the data source. They are formal style, consultative style, consultative style, and intimate style. It produces the following presentation result: 28 data of formal style (9%), 73 data of consultative style (24%), 166 data of casual style (57%), 31 data of intimate style (10%). Based on the analysis that has been carried out, this research found that there are four types of language styles used by the characters in the Wednesday film series, namely; formal style, casual style, consultative style, and intimate style. Casual style is the dominant type in this series because in this series, especially episode one, many conversations use everyday language and the conversation situations are more relaxed. In Wednesday film series there is no frozen style because there are no very serious situations such as prayers or sidings This study found there are four factors that influenced language style selected by the main character in Wednesday film series, namely; participant, setting, topic, and function.
