Abstract

The title of this thesis is “An Analysis of Politeness Maxim in The Movie ‘The Adventure of Tintin’.” Which in this research discussed the politeness maxims and social factors that affecting politeness. The aims of this research are to analyse the maxims of politeness according to Leech (1983), in dialogue conversations between characters and to analyse the social factors that influence politeness by Holmes (1992), in the movie “The Adventure of Tintin”. The data were analysed by using descriptive qualitative analysis method. There are 28 data that found in the movie. Based on the analysis there are the tact maxim occurs 9 times, accounting for 32% of the total occurrences. The generosity maxim is observed 3 times, making up 11% of the total. The approbation maxim appears 8 times, representing 28.5% of the total occurrences. The agreement maxim is seen 4 times, constituting 14% of the total. The modesty maxim is present 1 time, comprising 3.5% of the total. Lastly, the sympathy maxim occurs 3 times, accounting for 11% of the total. The analysis of politeness maxims within “The Adventure of Tintin” reveals that the tact maxim is the most effective politeness maxim in the contexts and social factors mentioned in the theory.
