Abstract

Plaque accumulation occured due to the use of fixed partial denture (FPD), it may lead to caries and periodontal diseases. Significant percentage of periodontal disease caused by FPD use has been reported. Oral probiotic as bacterial-therapy can be used to inhibit plaque formation. The objective of this research was to determine whether rinsing with yakult probiotic drink can decrease plaque accumulation on FPD users. This type of experimental research was pre and post test control group design, to 16 samples FPD users, 8 samples rinsing with yakult probiotic as treatment group and 8 samples rinsing chlorhexedine mouthwash as controlled group. Subject rinsing with 10 ml each, twice a day, 30 minutes after tooth brushing for 60 seconds in a period of 14 days. Plaque index measurement has been taken on the first and last day. The research analyzed with independent t-test to analyze the difference between treatment and controlled group. As results plaque index mean value by paired t-test, before and after rinsing yakult probiotic drink was 2.50 ± 0.58 and 1.33 ± 0.72 with significance of p = 0.001. The independent t-test after rinsing yakult probiotic drink and chlorhexedine was p = 0.535. This suggest rinsing yakult probiotic drink have the same effect with chlorhexedine in reducing plaque. It was concluded that rinsing with yakult probiotic drink can reduce plaque accumulation on FPD users.
