Abstract
Background: Acrylic resins are in contact with saliva, drinks and food so that dentures are a place for the formation of plaques and increased of microorganisms, one of the bacterium is Streptococcus mutans. Denture stomatitis is reported affect of 35- 50% of removable denture users. Yakulf probiotic drinks contain Lactobacillus casei Shirota bacteria which can be used as a binding for pathogenic microorganisms. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the heat cured acrylic resin immersion with a solution of Yakulf probiotic drinks can reduce the number of Streptococcus mutans bacteria colonies. Methods: The experimental design of this study was Pre-Post Test Control Group Design with the number of n =50 and consisted of 10 groups, acrylic resin plate immersed in saliva and contaminated with Streptococcus mutans, and then counted early. After that the heat cured acrylic resin was immersed in a solution of Yakult probiotic drinks in each group, 15, 30, 60 minutes, positive control and negative control. Afer that, planting Streptococcus mutans was carried out and the final calculation was carried out. Results: The results of the study were normally distributed and homogeneous and then analyzed by Paired T-Test (p <0.05) by showing the average number of colonies of Streptococcus mutans bacteria treated 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 60 minutes in a sequence of 102.20 ± 6.90 CFU/ ml, 117.00 ± 3.53 CFU/ ml and 117.40 +4.21 CFU/ ml. Further tests witl the Least Significant Difference - test (LSD) on Streptococcus mutans showed that there were significant differences except for positive controls with 30 minutes treatment, positive controls with 60 minutes Ireatment and 30 minutes treatmen with 60 minutes treatment. Conclusion: It can be concluded that immersion of heat cured acrylic resin plate in a solution of Yakull probiotic drinks can reduce the number of Sreptococcus mutans bacteria, with the most effective time in the 30 minute time group.
